It has begun..

Let the portalization begin…

Google Inc has announced that it will be soon launching a personalized home page on the lines of the ones currently offered by MSN and Yahoo!

The home page will include integrated features like integrated features its e-mail service Gmail, news, weather, stocks, driving directions and movie listings.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the begin of Googles decline, but it was sure a bad sign when the other search leaders did exactly the same thing right at the beginning of the dotcom bust.

I’m sure the temptation to bring in some more advertiser revenue will reach a point though where shareholders will really push for it.

If people really seem to like having all that content in one place and set their browser to load the page however many times a day they fire up the browser — because it’s their homepage — I’m sure the next step will be adding more ads to it.

I use a very similar service called Bloglines which is run by AskJeeves. You can add any xml feed and bloglines will automatically track it all for you. Each time you load the page it only shows you the new things, so it kind of takes out the whole ‘portal’ aspect of things.

In any case, I just mention this because after using this for a while, I definately can see how what google is doing will be popular. Depending on just how customizable it is, I think people will really eat it up.
