Update for BoingBoing Readers

Greetings everyone coming in from BoingBoing. I’m still going through all the talks, about 2/3rds of which are currently online now, with more to post as I edit them down. Don’t miss Penn Jillette’s Q&A, the Mythbusters Q&A (which hasn’t been posted yet) and Dr. Richard Wiseman’s talk.

The ideal way to hear these is via the podcast feed, as they will be downloaded in the proper order, preserving some sense of what the Amazing Meeting was like.

The volume is pretty low on these, but I couldn’t jack them up much more without distortion. You’ll just have to turn it up yourself. Some of the talks are worse than others in the audio department, so don’t give up on it if the first one you hear is too crappy for you.

As to your request for putting talkies on your pocket box, there’s a couple things you could do.

I assume you have iTunes, and if it’s a fairly recent version (which I also assume to be true, since Apple routinely breaks it and requires you to upgrade), it should have podcast support built in. There should be a place you can paste in an rss feed url and it will then magically fetch the files for you. Or so I’ve heard, iTunes is a mystery to me.

If you don’t have iTunes with podcast support, I recommend Juice (formerly known as iPodder, until Apple squeezed the the iPod out of the name. Get it?), which can be obtained at http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php

Like iTunes, it has a box you can paste am rss feed url into. Once you paste it in, click the button that isn’t labelled, but has an icon very similar to the ‘refresh’ button on a web browser. This button, oddly enough, is the refresh button. Then the program will download the files. I think it may default to only downloading the most recent file, but there are checkboxes next to all the others which you can check to enable it to download the others. How you get the files from your computer to your iPod from there is a mystery to me, as I’ve never used one.

Of course I’m also under the assumption that your pocket box is and ipod, but I think it’s a fair assumption, since there aren’t any players on the market that arent.

Anyway, Juice seemed to work fine. It downloaded all of them and then they showed up in iTunes somehow. Man, I used to be a "computer guy." Now it’s all too complicated for me. Or maybe it’s become so easy that I don’t get it anymore. At any rate, I didn’t feel old until I started doing this.

That program can be pretty sucky, but it mostly works. I actually use a modified version of it (enhanced, if you will) that interfaces with podnova.com, which is kind of like bloglines for podcasts. It allows you to add and remove podcasts without fireing up juice every time. In fact, many of the existing podcast’s webpages have little ‘add to podnova’ buttons. If that sort of thing is more your bag, I’d say download podnova’s client from podnova.com. It seems better than juice, but it is tied to an account you have to create on podnova.com.
