Mark it on your calendar, for today is a Red Letter Day…
There’s a dispute between two companies, one of which is Microsoft, and that’s whose side I’m taking. If you know me at all, you know this doesn’t happen very frequently.
See, Microsoft has a new version of Office coming out, which includes the nifty ability to save directly to a PDF file — a file format which has been touted by Adobe as being an “open format” as a feature for years now, not to mention the fact that this functionality is included in competing products from Apple, Sun and a myriad of other smalltime software developers — and guess who is pissed? Yup, Adobe.
They told Microsoft that they have to remove the functionality, and for some reason they’re actually doing it, despite the fact that it’s perfectly OK for them to include such functionality, as it is an “open format.” If I was Bill, I would have emailed them a PDF consisting of two words: “Fuck Off.”
