I’ve tried many times to use this method, and it always fails on my system. I’ve got a Mac running Snow Leopard, and was able to do everything up to step 5. All that happens when I try to run the mobidedrm.py script in terminal is a “No match” error message. I think it means it can’t find one of the files, but I’m not sure. I put the MobiDeDRM folder with the scripts in my homefolder and also moved the azw file there. I think the PID is right. I used both methods you gave and both PID’s match. I also renamed the azw file to tb.azw so it would be easier to type. I also did a cd command to change to the MobiDeDRM folder. Here’s the command and the response:

[localhost:~/MobiDeDRM] rbarnes% python mobidedrm.py tb.azw tb.mobi A6XHCIW*5Q
python: No match.
[localhost:~/MobiDeDRM] rbarnes%

I am completely stumped. Can you help me?

This way is actually the old way. The Kindle for PC way is still the best method for those that can use it. People on Macs or Linux still need to do it this old fashioned way.

I’m guessing it’s not likely that it’ll work with the Mac version. The way this one works uses a flaw in the way Windows manages its memory, so I suspect the Mac version will be more secure.

This worked fine for me. Sony wanted $18 for a book Amazon had for $8. Wanted to warn folks, the unswindle.pyw only works with the 32-bit version of Python. In fact, the files aren’t even recognized by the 64-bit Python. I just set it up on my laptop, but it’ll work fine on a 64-bit computer with 64-bit Vista, you just have to use the 32-bit version of Python.

Jer – Many thanks for a great job! I use Windows 7 and it works great. For those getting the “path” message, I get the impression that if Kindle for PC isn’t completely loaded (lots of books), that error message can appear. Patience pays!

Yah it worked just as you discribed except for one out of 9 books i had on in my kindle for pc. it must be one of thos topaz files you said would not convert. is there any way of know that before you purchase a book on amazon?

I got that the first time I ran it as well. I opened the folder that I unzipped unswindle (and mobidedrm) to, and double-clicked on mobidedrm, then double-clicked on unswindle and it worked. Not entirely sure why, but it works now.

What you’re missing is that Buzz is smart enough to learn what you’re going to find interesting and not bother to show you the stuff you won’t. No sandwich updates, no pictures of cats with poor grammar, etc.

For me, it’s got the few aspects of Twitter that I actually like, but removes a ton of the ones I hate.

It’s just the beginning, though; it’s promised to eventually be able to take input from any of the annoying services that you have one or two aspects you like and merge them all into one far-less-annoying super-service.

I guess we’ll see.
